The Airtail is a hypercar vehicle that was added to Jailbreak in the March 2021 Mid-Season Update of March 6, 2021. It spawned at the runway of the Bounty Bay Airport, and, for a short time, the Military Base. It had a price of Cash Icon600,000 until its retirement on January 9, 2022.

The Airtail is well-known for its remarkable performance and is commonly compared to the Roadster, M12 Molten, and the Eclaire by the community.

The Airtail went off-sale on January 7, 2022, along with the Classic as a part of Museum Revamp Update;[1] both went on-sale again on January 8, 2022 only in new servers, due to a data rollback to users who were involved with an infinite money glitch that was patched.[2] It went off-sale again on January 9, 2022, making this vehicle unobtainable.

Overview

The Airtail has notable butterfly doors, similar to the Beam Hybrid, Blade and Drone. The vehicle also has a long "tail" due to its rear end design, hence its name. It is a three-seater, which is uncommon, as most other hypercars and supercars are two-seaters. This makes the Airtail a great vehicle to use for trios.

Co-developer "asimo3089" gave out various reasons why the vehicle was retired, despite it being one of the newer vehicles: the game has too many supercars, the Concept would become more valuable (as the Concept was the only other obtainable car with excellent performance to seat more than two people), asimo3089 being unsatisfied with the Airtail's model,[3] and that the Airtail was underused compared to other vehicles within its price range.[4] This was argued by the fan base to be a detrimental decision due to other cars being used much less compared to the Airtail.

Performance

The Airtail proves its versatility through a balance of good speed combined with great acceleration, agile handling, very powerful brakes, and great off-roading potential. It can beat the Roadster in short time due to its significantly faster speed and high end acceleration.

The Airtail has a total of three seats, which is rare for supercars, with the next best-performing cars with more than two seats being the JB8, Surus, Icebreaker and Concept.

Overall, the Airtail has great performance, being far faster than the Roadster and having similar acceleration to the Aperture. Its performance and number of seats makes it a very suitable car for travelling in groups until players can obtain higher-capacity, more expensive vehicles.

On the other hand, the car has a slower speed than some other vehicles with similar prices, such as the Eclaire and the Brulee, but excels with superb acceleration and three seats.

The Airtail has a top speed of 272 MPH. İt's slightly faster than the Successor, but loses by a small margin to the Aperture. The Airtail's reverse speed is 80 MPH, which is faster than most vehicles in the game. It is tied with the Stallion. It is also faster than the Icebreaker by 2 MPH. Due to its very powerful launch it can beat most supercars and hypercars in the game; being able to climb the even the most steep surfaces comparable to the M12 Molten, Torero and Torpedo.

The launch provides a powerful burst of speed. It is close with the Carbonara, but falls behind the Eclaire and M12 Molten. It can reach 66 MPH. Early (0-150) Acceleration is slightly slower then many Hypercars like the Eclaire, Concept, Javelin and Beignet. Comparable to the M12 Molten. Mid-End (150-200) acceleration ties with the M12 Molten, and Low-High-End (200-220) Acceleration ties with the Concept and Aperture. All Rounder High End Acceleration (200-250) ties with the Aperture.

Being 1.4, it might be difficult to make sharp turns at high speeds for inexperienced drivers. But with experience, it can be easy to handle. The Airtail’s traction value is 300, which is the base value and is equal to most other cars in the game. The Airtail comes to a full stop in roughly 0.7 seconds, and can be compared to the Successor, Power-1 and Orion M42, but behind Roadster.

The Airtail’s ram slowdown duration is 2 seconds, the same as all of the hypercars except Manta and Roadster. With a health of 75, the Airtail is below average in terms of durability. It ties with most of it's Mclaren counterparts and many hypercars, but loses to the Megalodon.

Trivia

  • It shares the same engine sound as the now-unobtainable M12 Molten, Ray 9 and Trailblazer.
    • In real life, it’s engine noise would be closer to the Roadster.
  • This car has a custom stock license plate, reading out "MCL", which is short for McLaren.
  • A likely reason why the Airtail was placed next to the Jet in the teaser images is a reference to a race, between a McLaren Speedtail and an F-35 fighter jet, performed by Top Gear.
    • However, the Jet in-game is not based on the F-35, but rather a F-22.
  • The Airtail, along side the Drone is one of the only two vehicles so far to receive a 'RETIRED' plaque instead of the usual 'CLASSIC' plaque for other retired vehicles, such as the Brulee and SUV.
    • This is due to the Airtail not being a "classic" vehicle, being added in 2021, meaning it sports a detailed interior.
  • Many players were confused why the Airtail was retired, as it hadn't existed within the game for not even a year, and was the only vehicle with an interior to be retired.
    • asimo3089 stated in a tweet that there were too many supercars in the game, he was unhappy with the blender model and wanting the Concept to be more valuable, as the Airtail offered three seats.
  • At the latest map expansion update, a model of the Airtail is seen at the very top of the map in the Crater City.
    • However you cannot purchase or drive it.
      • asimo3089 pointed out in this tweet that he left it there by mistake. He also said that he used cars for size reference.
  • When the February 17th, 2023 update launched, several vehicles got nerfed due to chassis support bugs, with the Airtail having the biggest impact with a drastic top speed and acceleration reduction.

Miscellaneous Trivia

  • The Airtail is one of the longest land vehicle in the game, only behind the tied Firetruck and MCL36.
  • The Airtail is the tenth vehicle in Jailbreak to have a fictional name, after the Torpedo, M12 Molten, Volt, Arachnid, Deja, Boxer, Beam Hybrid, Surus and Ray.
  • The Airtail is the second McLaren to be added into Jailbreak, after the now-retired Megalodon, which is based on the McLaren 720S.
    • The Airtail is also the first McLaren to have an interior.
  • The Airtail is the second hybrid vehicle in the game, after the now-unobtainable Beam Hybrid and before the Power-1.
  • The Airtail is the second vehicle with the customized Rumble chassis, after the M12 Molten.
  • The Airtail is the fifth British-based car in Jailbreak, after the retired Mighty, which is based on the Mini-Cooper S (R53), the retired Megalodon, which is based on the McLaren 720s, the Celestial, which is based on the Rolls-Royce Wraith, and the retired Classic, which is based on the HRG 1500 WS Roadster.
  • The Airtail is the sixth car to feature three seats, after the Dune Buggy, Celestial, Ambulance as well as the now-unobtainable JB8, Poseidon and Banana Car.
  • The Airtail is the first car with a detailed interior to be retired.
  • The real life McLaren Speedtail has cameras instead of mirrors, making this a very unique hypercar.
