Handcuffs are an item in Jailbreak that are used to arrest guilty Prisoners and Criminals.

Overview

When a player is arrested, their hands will be forced behind their backs and they will not be able to move, aside from jumping and turning around in first-person. After 10 seconds, arrested players will then be teleported to their cell in either the Prison or Maximum Security Prison, depending on the bounty they had when they were arrested. They will then have to wait 20 seconds before they can leave their cell.

In the October 2022 Update, the Handcuffs have been revamped with a whole new design and effects, new target effect, and more. [1]

Arresting

Prisoners

Police officers can only arrest prisoners if they successfully pickpocket a police officer, carry an item (except the taser, handcuffs, and mansion invite), cause damage to another player, hit the electrical box at least once, or if they make it inside the Police Station, or an unauthorized area. You will lose Cash Icon25 if you attempt to arrest an innocent Prisoner. Attempting to arrest an innocent prisoner 3 times will reset your character and automatically make you a prisoner.

Criminals

Criminals can be arrested if the player leaves the prison. Unlike arresting Prisoners, you can arrest criminals anywhere you want. It is recommended to track down and arrest a criminal with high bounty first. Criminals are usually found in or around open Robberies & Heists depending on what group is open. Other Common locations criminals may be found at are either Criminal Base, Rising City, Mountainside Town, Prison and Crater City.

Arrestable Offenses

Offense Description
Pickpocketing The act of holding the 'E' prompt while behind a Police Officer's back, subsequently pickpocketing them. Prisoners will either get a Keycard, Pistol, or on rare occasions, a Donut.
Possession of contraband The act of having any item which isn't either the Taser, the Handcuffs, or the Mansion Invite. This can include Keycards, Weapons, Donuts, and Items.
Being hostile The act of punching another player will make you guilty. This can be used for all other crimes since players break the rules.
Escaping The act of attempting to escape. This includes punching the power box, exploding the wall and entering the Sewers.
Entering a Restricted Area The act of entering an area which is restricted to Criminals and Prisoners. This includes entering the Police Stations, the Security Office, the carpark and anywhere outside the Prison.
Becoming a Criminal The act of escaping the Prison and becoming a Criminal.
Entering a Vehicle The act of entering a vehicle, either the driver's seat or the passenger's seat.

Breakout

Criminals have the ability to breakout fellow criminals out of handcuffs. This can be done relatively easily, by holding "E" (pressing and holding on mobile, holding "Y" on console) on the arrested criminal's back. When broken out of handcuffs, the criminal who was broken out will lose all their items in their inventory and their bounty. It is important that you take care of the police before breaking out the other criminal, as this will not be effective if you are arrested in the process of attempting to save the other criminal. It's best to tend to yourself before helping others. There used to be a bug when the E prompt for the breakout feature did not appear, meaning you couldn't break out criminals. This has been recently patched. After the Store Robbing Update, prisoners can break out other arrested prisoners, but the E circle doesn't always appear for prisoners. If you break a person out and kill the police officer that arrested them for the first time, you will get the Bonnie and Clyde badge.

Ejection

Police are also able to eject Prisoners and Criminals from a vehicle by simply pressing "E" when their handcuffs are equipped. This effect makes the criminal or prisoner unable to get back inside the vehicle for two seconds. When a criminal or prisoner is ejected, they will appear on top of their car similar to when they hop out. If an aerial vehicle is ejected, all the players on the aerial vehicle will fall off the side, prompting them to use a parachute if they have been ejected from the sky. A police officer cannot eject another police officer no matter the circumstances, however, any criminals present in a police-driven vehicle will be ejected. Some fast vehicles, such as the Jet, Torpedo, Black Hawk, Roadster and Brulee are nearly immune to ejection when traveling at max speed due to traveling too fast for the player to hit the eject button quick enough. These vehicles' tires must be shot out (shot down in the Black Hawk's case) in order to eject criminals in them.

There is a bug where the ejection feature only ejects one criminal and not all criminals from their car. This is most likely due to lag, albeit this has not been confirmed by asimo3089 or badcc.

Tips and Tricks

  • When you have a police close and chasing after you, spam jumping, unpredictable side movement and an occasional roll is a good way of avoiding arrest.
  • If a criminal is moving too quickly or is too far away, try using the taser or a weapon. The more damage that a character takes, the slower their move speed. Use this to your advantage to catch up to them and make the arrest. The pistol is a good weapon for the damage method, as it is accurate and always spawns with you. (See Police)

Glitches

  • There is a glitch where police cannot arrest criminals/prisoners with handcuffs. This glitch seems to happen at random times. It has been one of the longest-running glitches in Jailbreak, and has finally been mostly patched recently. This mostly happens in laggy servers, or if the criminal or police officer is laggy. This is probably due to the glitch of being arrested then switching to the Police team before you are teleported back into Prison, then switching back onto Prisoner team but unable to get the E button to work on nearly everything.
  • Sometimes when prisoners have just escaped using the explode wall method, they are on the criminal team, but you can't arrest them. This method was replaced by the fence escape in the 1 Year Anniversary update but soon reverted in the Sewer Update.
  • Police can arrest Prisoners/Criminals from far away on laggy servers.
  • There are glitches where after you kill yourself by jumping on the electrical fence outside of the prison, you will be teleported to the Volcano Criminal Base, but still as a prisoner. This has since been patched. But in rare occasions, this glitch can still happen in laggy servers.
  • There used to be a glitch where if a player wore a specific UGC item, they would not be able to be arrested, This has been patched in February of 2023.
  • There is a glitch where the arrest button would sometimes not show up on criminals stunned by the Taser.

Trivia

  • The handcuffs were the exact same gear/toy version of the handcuffs from the LEGO® Hero Factory toys series.
  • Police used to be able to put handcuffs in Bed Drawers, switch to a prisoner, and use the handcuffs as prisoners. But they can't do anything with it. However, after the Day 2 of Return of 5 days of vehicle update, Police can no longer stash handcuffs in Bed Drawers.
  • The handcuffs have a cool-down time of around 1.5 seconds, which means that when you arrest a prisoner/criminal, you cannot arrest another one until 1.5 seconds passes by.
  • On Mobile, you used to be able to tap to arrest. This was known as tap arrest and it allowed mobile players to easily arrest moving players, as arresting moving players while pressing and holding on the screen would be difficult for mobile players.
    • This has been replaced with hold-to-arrest.
  • asimo3089 explained this in a tweet on why it takes so long to fix the handcuffs.
    • He said that it has something to do with patching auto-arresting, an exploit where a police officer teleports around the map arresting criminals.
  • When players get arrested, the handcuffs are invisible on their hands. But when police hold them, they are not invisible.
  • The arresting position was changed in the Weapons/Items Update when someone gets arrested.
  • Unlike Prison Life, players of the Police team who were resetted and automatically became a Prisoner can still join the Police Team, regardless of how many times they arrested an innocent prisoner.
